Asylum is a form of protection available to anyone at risk of serious harm in their home country who must leave in search of safety in another country. The first step for a person seeking asylum is to leave one’s home, one of the most difficult decisions a person will ever make. To apply for asylum in France, you must first address yourself to the First Reception Structure for Asylum Seekers (SPADA), an association that will help you make your appointment at the one-stop shop of the prefecture of your place of residence. The SPADA will provide you with an asylum application registration form as well as a summons for the appointment with the dedicated asylum application service center, which will take place in 3 days (10 days during busy periods). The terms “refugee”, “asylum seeker” and “migrant” are used to describe people who are on the move, who have left their countries and have crossed borders. The terms “migrant” and “refugee” are often used interchangeably but it is important to distinguish between them as there is a legal difference. In order to apply for asylum in France, you must first contact a first reception center for asylum seekers (SPADA), who will inform you about the asylum procedure and will give you an appointment at the single-desk contact point for asylum seekers (GUDA) that has regional jurisdiction.
