« Bluebeard » (French: Barbe bleue, [baʁb(ə) blø]) is a French folktale, the most famous surviving version of which was written by Charles Perrault and first published by Barbin in Paris in 1697 in Histoires ou contes du temps passé. The demand to open each door represents Judith’s sexual demands on their wedding night. Bluebeard’s reluctance can be read as performance anxiety, his fear of making himself vulnerable to her.
