DANCING IN THE LIGHT - A RETROSPECTIVE ON EARLY TAIWAN CINEMATOGRAPHY took two years to complete. It is both an homage to the works of the first generation Taiwan cinematographers and a history of Taiwan film and culture, breathlessly spanning World War Ⅱ to 1980. Early Taiwanese cinematographers - whose voices appear on the soundtrack - were at the cutting edge of Taiwanese art, culture and politics. They brought an innovative approach to shooting, totally alien to the Western practices. This is the first time some footage being released from the vaults of the Chinese Taipei Film Archive since their first screenings decades ago. This is also the first film to present a perspective and authoritative portrait of Taiwan's troubled film industry.

In the 1980s we got our MTV but seemed to have lost much of the musical film in the process. But the genre is resilient. A handful of masterpieces along with a few cult classics emerged from this decade. In the 1990s the Hollywood musical was largely animated, rather than live action. However, television had a surprising number of musical offerings, including “Gypsy” with Bette Midler and “Annie” which launched director Rob Marshall. In the 2000s musicals came back starting with “Moulin Rouge” and carrying on with “Chicago,” “Dreamgirls” and “Hairspray.” There are movies based on Broadway triumphs and once again there are teens singing and dancing.

One day, a club opens across her house. Late at night, Bok-hee is stirred from her sleep by the music resonating from the club—it sounds familiar. It’s the same tune she used to dance to with her friends when young. Fueled by nostalgia, Bok-hee decides to visit the club, hoping to relive those cherished memories. Yet, upon arrival, she is greeted by a reality far from her expectations.

A progression of events. Each scene is allegorical, a puzzle of symbology, from the initial cause to its extinction and finally to its representational aftermath. It is a personal vision of the realization of the confines of religious dogma and their eventual defeat and the realization of residual traces left over after its destruction.
