Decades

The short film "Der Rückfall in die Dekadenz" by Federico Mesina deals with the 28-year-old actor Friedrich von Rebenstiel, who has agreed to be interviewed for a film. In the style of a mockumentary, von Rebenstiel is also accompanied outside of the interview. In an ironic way, the short film attempts to break up the fiction described by Friedrich with shots from reality and at the same time show the problematic relationship between role and private person. In doing so, the initially clear boundary becomes increasingly blurred and ultimately erases the private person completely.

A handful of Hong Kong filmmakers explore their feelings on the ten years since 1997 in A Decade of Love, an omnibus film premiering at the 2008 Hong Kong Summer International Film Festival. A Decade of Love crosses multiple genres for its nine segments, from comedy to drama to satire to fantasy, with each director utilizing different actors. Each segment runs roughly ten minutes, and each uses that time to share something unique, personal and precious about post-Handover Hong Kong life.

Best known for her drawings of the ocean and the galaxies of the night sky, Vija Celmins has solidified herself as one of the most important artists of the postwar generation. Stepping back from painting in order to explore her photorealistic drawing style, Celmins creates spectacularly precise renderings of the natural world. In her forty year retrospective at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Celmins recalls her beginnings in abstraction, her choices of subject matter after freeing herself of the New York School influence, and her later immersion in what must be termed her great master drawings.

Bad Religion celebrates their forty years of making music with Decades; a four-episode event captured live at The Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, California. The band felt it important to commemorate the conclusion of 2020 as a strange moment in history when they reached that 40-year milestone. The celebratory episodes will include live performance footage, exclusive interviews, and a peek at their rehearsals leading up to the taping of Decades.

This video work combines both performance and video art. The artist portrays a state of stress -- the stress from self-pressure and the fear of turning 30 years old. Using a unigue architectural structure and video techonology, the artist imagines three decades of herself.

A 90 minute program of film footage from the Elton John archive, carefully selected for Elton's fans. Elton exclusively gives an overview of the chosen songs, and there are truly rare interviews with Thom Bell, Cameron Crowe, and other individuals who play major roles in the history of these songs. For the first time, forty years of selected Elton's incredible stage costumes can be viewed from every angle in the stunning costume gallery. Other highlight include a retrospective of Your Song, which includes Elton performing the song from every era of his career, and the film for I'm Still Standing, as created by David LaChappelle for Elton's Las Vegas shows.

Hans Haacke is a key figure in contemporary art whose work intersects with conceptual, pop, minimal and land art. The artist is particularly known for his research into the hidden economies and politics of the art world and the repressed histories of places and peoples. Haacke's strong political, cultural and social concerns are reflected in his installations, texts and sculptures.

"Brice Marden: 4 Decades" follows the renowned abstract artist as he explores his acclaimed 2006 MoMA retrospective with curator Gary Garrels. Applauded for his bold and contemporary style, Marden speaks openly with Garrels about his approach, beginnings and influences. His fluid and colorful works demand attention but welcome the viewer to choose their own path within the painting itself. Marden's career is mapped out through a tour of the exhibition, as he and Garrels discuss key works of the last forty years.

"Elizabeth Murray: 4 Decades" tracks the artist's career and shows her moving forward fearlessly toward new shapes and concepts for her unique style of painting. Inspired by artists of the Abstract Expressionism movement such as Willem de Kooning and Philip Guston, Murray was privy to their technique and motive. Though she may share ideals with her artistic predecessors, Murray has created miraculously original work which she discusses with curator Robert Storr as they explore her MoMA retrospective.

Ed Ruscha made his very first art in his native Oklahoma, but soon became attracted to Los Angeles . Curator Margit Rowell has examined his extensive body of work and created a brilliant exhibition of his seldom seen drawings. Rowell visits Ruscha in his studio, looking at new paintings with the artist, discussing his progress over the decades and asking him to comment on the many milestones in his large retrospective exhibition at MoCA in Los Angeles.

Chiller 13: The Decade's Scariest Movie Moments, produced by Emmy Award-winning company Associated Television International, features a diverse group of pop culture mavens and horror movie experts looking back on the top 13 scary movie moments of the past 10 years. Featured participants include renowned special makeup effects supervisor Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead), comedians Dan Gurewitch & David Young (collegehumor.com), actress Betsy Russell (the Saw anthology), writer Steve Niles (30 Days of Night), actor Tony Todd (Final Destination) and horror film director Lucky McKee (May, Chiller's original movie The Passenger), among others.

"Sol LeWitt: 4 Decades" presents an opportunity to accompany one of the great artists of our time on a tour of his work, from his formative years to the present. Joined by curator Gary Garrels, LeWitt offers context and motive behind his 2000 retrospective exhibition at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art. A heavy emphasis is placed on LeWitt's spectacularly large scale wall drawings, for which he is best known. Garrels, who with LeWitt, spent three years on the creation of the exhibition, leads the artist through his breakthroughs of four decades, from the 1960s to the present.
