Moving On

A convent teacher spreads a little happiness and makes enough money to support her crippled brother's habit by selling her favours regularly on a cross-country night sleeper. She makes sure she is in control of each encounter until one client reaches her more than she expects.

Athens. Nothing seems to move. The locals seem as still as statues. While at the same time, somewhere, a caryatid is escaping from a museum and a small group of people demands the destruction of all antiques. Would film be the only way to avoid stone-cold indifference?

Yang Fudong, one of the most influential contemporary artists in China, is known for his epic black-and-white films and photographs, which straddle the worlds of contemporary art installation and cinema. Moving Mountains is a 46-minute, black-and-white film, accompanied by photographs from the film set, drawings and props. The film is inspired by the ancient tale of a man, seeking to move a mountain, and extolls the virtues of perseverance and collective action. The artist makes this story a poetic reflection upon human nature and the shifting values to which it can be subjected.

The dynamic Flora has decided to burglarize Colonel de la Ribodiere's apartment in the company of Romeo and Clotaire. The two men discover the old soldier lifeless on his bed. One after the other, the colonel's goddaughter Annette, the gendarmes and their brigadier, the Grivier cousins, who are sniffing out the inheritance, and the three thieves, who are hoping to get their way, pass by each other and avoid each other in the house. La Ribodière isn't dead, but he listens to what's being said, forms an opinion about everyone, ousts the Griviers, rewards Annette with a betrothal to Clotaire, and gives Flora and Roméo absolution.

NG Wing-sze, previously in award-winning short Conditioned (2015), feature films Septet: The Story of Hong Kong (2022) and Mad Fate (2023), plays Mevius and shares the screen with RubberBand lead vocal No.6 in this colourful romantic comedy.
