Filmed at the Arena di Verona in Verona, Italy on September 26th, 2010, Scratch My Back is the first of a pair of concert films directed by Gabriel's daughter Ana and Andrew Gaston. This film is taken from footage from the first set of that show, where Gabriel does a section of cover songs (including David Bowie's "Heroes" and The Magnetic Fields "The Book Of Love" while backed up by a symphony orchestra conducted by Ben Foster (BBC's Doctor Who, Torchwood) It is a companion piece to Gabriel's concert film 'Taking The Pulse'. Lena is a young art student new to London. Calling it her art project, she obsessively follows and takes pictures of an unwitting Sol. He is a scruffy, charismatic 20 year old, by all appearances homeless, who drifts around in numerous detached relations to people affiliated with the art scene. Her project takes a wrong turn when Sol discovers her. Fascinated by her odd behaviour, Sol is now the one to follow her.

Scratch begins as a standard 8 film fragment, originally filmed in our 60’s basement kitchen, and reprojected as a loop 5 times with a repeated coda of junk and glitch footage, onto a ground glass screen, refilmed in black and white on 16mm film stock.This sequence then begins a series of repetitions that run through negative image, reversed image, solarized, solarized and double exposed, colourized, and finally solarised and reversed with a colour sequence for each process. The central colour section repeats and starts to reverse the procedure through the sequences to the first iteration.At this point a scratch appears, a rich white line that appears momentarily on the image...

Scratched lines and shapes bloat around this footage of an unknown businessman, sometimes forming hats, clown noses, arrows, etc. He becomes a kind of pawn in my cruel little game. Sound is a musicbox which helps lift this once painfully boring footage to the level of high art. –H. M.
