Chinese opera, whether of the Peking variety or not, is a very demanding art-form, requiring decades of study to be even partly mastered. In this film, Yan Yuejun was a Soochow Opera performer who fell afoul of the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s, and who has served his time undergoing compulsory "re-education." Now he is living in Inner Mongolia, driving a truck for a living, which is surely proletarian enough to suit his earlier tormentors.
Four boys, friends and cousins, in between adolescence and adulthood, make the most of their holidays. Followers of Renoir, with pure simplicity and casualness, emancipated from the ponderousness of a script, these four boys involve us in the nonchalance of their idleness, and in their free-flowing futility. In the course of some idle-talk, of a carefree swim in the river of time, or the vacuity of a summer evening, the memory of communist past resurfaces.

The current crisis facing the Greek tertiary educational system is examined in this documentary which goes into the university and looks at the issues from the varied and sometimes conflicting perspectives of those involved. It’s spring 2006 and the university corridors are bristling with political activity. Students are getting ready for elections, professors are also voting for deans, while a group of engineering students is totally engrossed in preparing for an international competition and doesn’t seem to notice any of this. They all want a better public university system, but how can they achieve it? We witness a crisis in the making. When students decide to occupy the university, it turns into a standoff between the government, professors and students. Finally, as Professor Vokos observes, “perhaps we’re afraid of facing reality.”
