The Price Of Smiles

The Price of Cheap tells the stories of modern slaves in textiles manufacturing supply chains and the brave individuals fighting on the ground against immeasurable odds to help them. We follow a man named Joseph Raj, who runs an organization called T.E.S.T. (Trust for Education and Social Transformation) in Tamil Nadu, India as he goes on raids to rescue underage children from unsafe and labour intensive factories. We hear from the survivors he has helped rescue, hear of their horrific experiences, and desire for education and change. Academics and social justice workers weigh in on why the issue of forced labour persists.

When Leonora Corbett phones Colin Keith-Johnson that she wants to give their marriage another chance, he tries to buy off his lover Judy Kelly. She wants to stick around for the wife, with a gun. There's a struggle, and Keith-Johnson sticks the inconvenient body in a trunk and begins to figure out how to get rid of it.

Murray, the president of the union, hides the papers in the house containing plans for a big strike. He thoughtlessly tells his wife that the boss would give much to know the contents of the papers. Extremely vain, and yearning for fine raiment, she sells the papers to the boss, who informs the men of his knowledge, forestalling the strike. Murray is accused of being a traitor, and the men agree to continue under present conditions if he is discharged. When Mrs. Murray realizes the enormity of her offense she burns the money and confesses to her husband. He refuses to forgive her, and parts from her in a dramatic scene.

A young couple decides they are ready for a divorce and tired of dealing with each other. However, with a cruel twist of fate they realize that sometimes life does not allow us to give up so easily. They must put their own selfish desires aside and come together to get through the crises.

The son of a newspaper editor visits his uncle in Germany and learns how government control gradually took away the freedom of the people. He returns and influences his father to print news items which will lead the people of their community to see the world situation as it is instead of as they want to believe it is.

The Price of Justice is a documentary film that follows four women as they try to pursue cases against their former employers. Taken into kafkaesque circumstances, these workers spend their days in waiting rooms, long queues and tribunals in a frustrating attempt to get access to justice. This documentary is my latest collaboration with Rights Exposure for Hong Kong Federation of Domestic Workers and has the support of the International Labour Organisation.

Queen Elizabeth II visits Jamaica for her Golden Jubilee Celebrations. While there, she is petitioned by a small group of Rastafari for slavery reparations. For Rastafari, reparations is linked to a desire to return to Africa, the homeland of their African ancestors who were enslaved in Jamaica during British colonial rule. The film traces this petition, as well as a reparations lawsuit against the Queen. In the background are the stories of earlier Rastas who pursued reparations in the 1960s, and who undertook a historic mission to Africa to organize official repatriation. The film explores how Britain grew wealthy from slavery and the impact of slavery on independent Jamaica, following the filmmaker on a journey, during which the question of reparations reaches Parliament in both Jamaica and the UK. Filmed over a decade, The Price of Memory is a compelling exploration of the enduring legacies of slavery and the case for reparations.
