A Dream Of Dolls Dancing

The Ihme-Zentrum is a residential, shopping and economic center in the German city of Hannover. Planned in the roaring 1960ies the building has been subject of discussion for many years. The shopping mall is abandoned after the investor, the Carlyle Capital Corp went bankrupt in the Financial Crisis of 2007/2008. It is considered one of the ugliest buildings in northern Germany and a symbol for bad planning in Urban Science. In 2014 the journalist and expert on sustainabilty Constantin Alexander moved into the complex as an experiment linking a New Journalism approach with an environmental scanning. This blog documents his analysis. In spring of 2016 together with a group of inhabitants, architects, artists and other experts he founded the group Zukunftswerkstatt Ihme-Zentrum (future workshop). The goal is to transform the Ihme-Zentrum from a ruin into a new landmark for Hannover and a symbol for a modern, sustainable and creative city.

This is the fourth film in my self-portrait series. I went back to the village named 47 km in 2013. My grandfather was critically ill, and I accompanied him like accompanied the death. The old people and their memories are like dead leaves. I got familiar with the children and we acted together to build a bookroom in village. Between the solitary old people and the naïve sunshine children, can I find my dream here?

This debut film harks back to the moral debate that has dominated Thai popular culture for the past twenty years. Two boys from a working-class family grow up as best friends. One is the son of a farmer, the other of a Thai-Chinese greengrocer. In a childhood scene, we see the boys wondering how to get ahead in life. Instead of the usual options - showbiz or Thai boxing - they choose to follow in the footsteps of their fathers: one wants to become a rowing champion and the other leader of a dragon dance group. The film is a simple moral tale of fathers and sons, good and bad influences, honor and shame. The screenplay breathes the atmosphere of early Thai cinema with a strong melodramatic tone, but its exaggeration and predictability are offset by the dynamic camera work and editing, the decent acting and the unusual glimpse into the world of the Chinese minority in Thailand.

The average age of an ordinary stone is about two billion years. Even if a person sits with the stone for a whole day, it will be just one trillionth of its life. This poetic and beautifully shot film attempts to look at stones beyond the human gaze. It sees them through the prism of St. Petersburg and its granite embankments, the ‘Devil's’ megalith in the Leningrad region and the high mountains of Georgia, where the ancient city of Uplistsikhe is carved into the rock. At the edge of time, this film gives us a glimpse of a world that humankind may never reach.

In short, they are all learning to live.
