This film depicts the life of the 19th-century Portuguese writer Wenceslau De Moraes by means of nine ancient ballads from China. The writer married a Chinese woman after he left his wife and family to go live in Macao. Later, he moved to Japan where he fell in love with a Japanese woman, staying in Japan for the rest of his life. Mixed in with the career and loves of Moraes is the history of Portugal at home and in its colonies.

Nathalie inherits an island, Xavana, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Even with the warnings that something bad is waiting for them, given by a saint's mother, they decide to leave and get to know the place. On the island, over 100 years ago, Xavana, a farmer's only daughter, fell in love with a foreigner. Faced with her father's opposition, she decides to run away with her boyfriend to a desert island, where they live happily, in harmony with nature. One day, hallucinated, Xavana went into the sea and never came back. On the enchanted island, many surprises await them both

There's the continent ruled by a repressive government and there's an island where political activists of the continent take refuge on running away from the continent's police. The killer is a woman , Ana (Neide Ribeiro). She will go there as a journalist sent there to interview the leaders of the movement. On arriving to the island, she will find out that things were much different from what she expected. Will Ana be involved by the "island of forbidden pleasures." Will she fulfill her mission?

After a violent civil war, D. Miguel, the last Portuguese absolutist king, is defeated by the liberals, led by his brother D. Pedro. In 1834 D. Miguel left for exile. His supporters don't give up on returning him to the throne. Willing to do anything they even try to use the slaves of the colonies. A mysterious emissary is sent to Cape Verde to prepare an uprising. But other reasons were behind his visit to the archipelago ....

Corvo Island is the smallest island in the Archipelago of the Azores, in the Atlantic Ocean. Its area is 17 square km and its population 390. These images and sounds were recorded there in 1977 between the 16th and the 29th of August. To its inhabitants we would like to express our thanks in the making of this film.
