A Chinese legend of a tragic love story of a pair of lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai.

Inspired by the romance of Liang Shang Bo and Zhu Ying Tai, the story revolves around two lovers who will overcome all obstacles to remain together. Ling Chang Feng is an honourable general and has been in a passionate marriage with his wife for the past 3 years. However, a strange disturbance hits their city on their third anniversary, and "madmen" run wild in the town, attacking innocent citizens violently. Ling Chang Feng leaves his wife behind to protect the people but when he returns, finds that his wife has been infected by this phenomenon. He refuses to reveal this as he knows that anyone who turns mad will be killed. He keeps her by his side in secret while trying to solve the cause of this frightful phenomenon.

Zhu Yanzhi, disguised as a man, seeks to learn martial arts with an elite clan. Once she begins her intense training, Zhu finds herself at odds with her trainer and superior, Liang.

Disguised as a boy to attend school, Zhu Yingtai fell in love with a scholar, Liang Shanbo. The two searched for a way to pursue true love and break the shackles of the conservative world, but their story was destined to end in tragedy. Their love touched the heavens, and they were finally allowed to be together as a pair of butterflies. In this tale, Liang Shanbo was a righteous and kind man. When he fell in love with Zhu Yingtai, he was smitten and vowed to marry only her. However, the Zhu family was vehemently against the marriage, and soon his health gradually deteriorated until he became critically ill. Then, he died and his spirit emerged in the form of a butterfly, just like Zhu Yingtai, so that they could finally be together forever.

In some faraway place, the Laws and the Chuks are two big families that have been foes for a century as they can never stand each other. In a chance encounter, the Law Family’s fourth son Law Mak-au falls head over heels in love with Chu Lai-yip, who is the younger cousin sister of the Chuk Family’s matriarch Chuk Ying-kiu. Lai-yip already has a finacé. If her marriage eventually falls through, Ying-kiu’s status as the chair will be affected. However, due to some past event about herself, Ying-kiu resolutely decides to let Lai-yip make her own choice, sowing the seeds of a duel between the two families. In the meantime, Leung Shan-pak adopts Max Ton as his name and lives in Hoi Pak City, which is the Law Family’s territory. To avoid assassins, he goes to the Chuk Family’s Tin Nam City and then the mysterious Zone 8. He again runs into two women who were seemingly associated with him.

Butterfly Lovers is a Chinese television series based on the legend of the Butterfly Lovers, starring Peter Ho and Dong Jie as Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai respectively. The series was first broadcast on GZTV in China in 2007.
