In this New Year’s Day performance, Laurent Pelly’s storybook staging of Massenet’s Cendrillon, a hit of the 2017–18 season, is presented with an all-new English translation in an abridged 90-minute adaptation, with mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as its rags-to-riches princess. Maestro Emmanuel Villaume leads a delightful cast, which includes mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo as Cinderella’s Prince Charming, soprano Jessica Pratt as her Fairy Godmother, and mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe and bass-baritone Laurent Naouri as her feuding guardians. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

This 20th-century retelling of the classic fairy tale keeps all the familiar elements — a selfish step-sister, a put-upon beauty, a Prince Charming, and, of course, a lost slipper — but shifts the action to a contemporary boarding house. Cinderella, played by Mary Fuller, befriends an elderly resident, who buys a party outfit for her favorite when Cinderella’s elder sister preens for a dance. The new clothes transform the unassuming maiden into the toast of the ball. Finding Cinderella’s missing shoe, a dashing young man follows the clue to his grandmother, Cinderella’s friend at the boarding house, who works her magic to reunite the couple.

The typical Cinderella storyline: wicked stepmother and stepsisters, and Cinderella can't go to the ball. We see elves and woodland creatures making a dress and a coach out of various woodland materials. A twist: the coach they make then goes though a "modernizer" and comes out as a 1946 Chevy.

The myth of Cinderella undergoes a series of generative twist to illumine the inventive power of speech. 11 children and 3 educated women engaged in a game of improvisation via their talking-head camera presence. Tale-telling to some children is the realization of creative instincts, to others the performance of self, or it's simply a tedious pedagogic vessel. My research-creation completes with adult women transforming the usage of Cinderella-objects into agents of their own stories, however fragmentary or elliptical. The event of tale-telling woke up the child in them; children language was appropriated to perform unarticulated subjectivities. Gender is a complex system, most revealing in language-in-action. The coda is a grand finale celebrating the magical power of objects and their own unlimited lives. Story-telling is the most primitive form of play. Harmless it may look, it is also the most sophisticated embodiment of ideological workings.

The film shows that trying to get more than you need or deserve only leads to trouble.

Princess Cinderella gives birth to a baby girl. The king, the baby’s father, gives her the name, Ira Maya. The neighboring King, who plans to betroth the baby with his son, attends the big party for the baby’s birth. The celebration is ruined with the appearance of the Wicked Witch who curses that Ira Maya will die if a needle pricks her. This is actually the plot of the Stepmother who wants to ruin Princess Cinderella’s happiness. To avoid this evil plan, Ira Maya is raised in the forest by the four good fairies. They keep moving and Ira Maya even changes her name to Mawar because the Wicked Witch is hunting her. When Mawar is an adult, she plays by the waterfall and meets a hunter. The good fairies explain to him who Mawar actually is. When she is approaching 17, Ira Maya and the four good fairies return to the palace. But the Step Mother and the Wicked Witch still want to see her suffer and even hunt the Hunter, who is actually the son of the neighboring King.
