Antero and Maria Araújo's story is the shortcut chosen by the director to show life in Maraima, a small town in the state of Ceará, Brazil, including life in community and the military influence. Maria wanders through the state praying to ward off the symbolical presence of the Dragon. That's when she finds Antero, an end-of-the-world prophet, who will join her in her pilgrimage and fight against the mythical being.

Based on real facts, the film reveals veiled memories of the suffering of blacks enslaved on the banks of the Rio das Almas in Pirenopolis-GO. With the exploration of gold mining, the Frota family gets rich at the expense of tax evasion and human sacrifices.

Jim and Connie's postwar New York building troubles keep Jim from working on his novel. Ex-WAC from Jim's army days Roberta moves in, further upsetting Connie but pleasing Jim's friend Ed. Tenant Charley, who marries tenant Eadie, loans money to Jim to help him keep the building, money which this Casanova obtains from rich widows.

A beautiful Chinese girl, Meiling, has a forbidden love affair with a young American man in Singapore. He leaves Singapore and never returns. Meiling gives birth to their Eurasian daughter whom she names Perfect Harmony. When she grows up, Perfect Harmony journeys to America to search for her father.
