June 1946: Stalin invites Russian emigres to return to the motherland. It's a trap: when a ship-load from France arrives in Odessa, only a physician and his family are spared execution or prison. He and his French wife (her passport ripped up) are sent to Kiev. She wants to return to France immediately; he knows that they are captives and must watch every step.

Three continents, three languages, three women. Three women who live in Marseille and who have in common the same sea, the same horizon. Every morning, they wake up, immerse themselves in the city, work, struggle, love, try to find their places in the daily life of France. A daily life, like a tightrope between the past and the present, between here and there, woven and shaped every day by the thoughts and letters addressed to the distant family.

In this quasi-semi-documentary, a Russian angel leads viewers in a quest to discover what, if anything, remains of the great, utopian "American Dream" now that the so-called "Worker's Paradise" dream of Russia has passed completely into oblivion. Along the way, real celebrities and working members the film community in Hollywood are interviewed, and a number of "types" are impersonated by actors. Some of the celebrities interviewed include Jacqueline Bisset, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and screenwriter Jonathan Lawton (the Pretty Woman script writer).

During the Civil War, in Wyoming, horse dealers Joan Britton and Stephen Cook are competing to supply the Union Army with horses. A Cherokee is in the area to stir up the Sioux against the Union just as Cook decides to steal a herd of Sioux horses. Ex-army doctor Jonathan Westgate opposes Cook’s unscrupulous methods as well as being Cook’s rival for the affections of Joan. It seems Westgate is the only one able to prevent a new Indian war.

A young gay man, identified as a writer, encounters a local policeman, who arrests him for public cruising in a park. The policeman is more than professionally curious about the young man, who seems to have the cop's number and suddenly kisses him.
