If Everything Was Real

A country can be judged by two things: the way it treats children and the elderly. This story is about an elderly woman living in Ukraine who, like all old people, struggles with poverty every day. But, despite all the difficulties and troubles that are encountered on her way, she does not despair and continues to hope that Everything Will Be Alright.

Two seven years old boys ask God to fulfill their biggest wish and give them chewing gum. This film is based on a short story by Davíð Oddsson, the Prime Minister of Iceland 1991-2004.

At the end of a long-term relationship, a half-blind director, born in 1986, whose mother blames his illness on the Chernobyl nuclear accident, leaves his life in Romania behind and embarks on a journey out of the desire to find and other people affected by the same disaster. He falls in love with a young woman from Ukraine and his life changes completely.

Believe it or not, this up-close and often upsetting documentary is full of laughter, fun and moments of genuine theatrical magic.

After EverythingThe film shows a dystopian world where brutality and inhumanity are commonplace and part of everyday routine. The atmosphere of doom is emphasized by the combination of black and white footage, harsh settings and industrial noise music. The powerful story leads to a situation in which brutality is victorious, yet beyond total destruction there is also room for a new beginning.

The story is based around an American Idol kind of TV talent show and the eventual winner of the contest: a young orphan woman, who works at an orphanage herself. As I learned from the werkfilm on the DVD, the story was specifically written for Oláh, who in real life was the runner-up of the very first such TV show in Hungary “Megasztár” (“MegaStar”) in 2004. She didn’t win there despite being many viewers’ favorite and having a terrific voice. It is kind of a consolation that she won in the movie, although reading the legal troubles about getting her fee must have made the victory sour.
