On 19 February 2003, four days after an international day of protest against the imminent invasion of Iraq, René Major and the Institut des hautes études en psychanalyse organized a public debate in Paris between Jacques Derrida and Jean Baudrillard: ‘Pourquoi la guerre aujourd’hui?’ In the twelve years between the debate and its publication in book form, the ‘war on terror’ has escalated in an often unpredictable manner. However, the discussion between Derrida and Baudrillard has proven to be prescient, and their analyses remain useful for thinking the contemporary geopolitical moment.

It affected not only the armed forces, but also economy, education, health, agriculture, industry, and the propaganda services. In order to feed 80 million soldiers and to supply essentials to civilians, the resources of the whole world were being mobilized. Our current organization of food circuits owes a lot to innovations of the Great War.

Ariane Mnouchkine, the founder of the Théâtre du Soleil who was born when war was declared in 1939, was in shock. The desire of Ariane Mnouchkine and her actors is to find with Ukrainian artists, beyond differences of language and culture, a common and universal language: that of theater.

In 1971, António Lobo Antunes' life is brutally interrupted when he is drafted into the Portuguese Army to serve as a doctor in one of the worst zones of the Colonial War – the East of Angola. Away from everything dear he writes letters to his wife while he is immersed in an increasingly violent setting. In the uncertainty of war events, only the letters can make him survive.
