After their journey that led them to the sea, our four cows, Clarisse, Marguerite, Aglaé and Rosine, are now on their way to the mountains. JB, the eco-pastoral guide, invited them to join him on a trip to discover the snow-capped peaks.

Terrible mountains is what Leonardo da Vinci called the peaks that surround the Valtellina. They take the leading role in this story, which is rendered with the help of spectacular film footage and the stories of local inhabitants. With its dry stone walls – a masterpiece that has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO – Valtellina is a land of traditions, contrasts and breathtaking landscapes. From the Stelvio National Park, with its imposing Forni glacier, to the peat bog of Pian Gembro, and from the mysterious crotti of Chiavenna to the terraced vineyards on the Rhaetian slope. In an attentive and intimate way, the film takes the audience on a journey along the river Adda that crosses the entire valley. It begins in winter until the following autumn according to the infinite cycle of nature, which is a stern but honest friend of the people living in this land located in the far north of Italy.

The starting point of the film is the so-called Moroccan Star, which was affixed to a rock face by the 4e Division Marocaine de Montagne in Feldkirch, Vorarlberg, at the end of the Second World War. The division was part of the French Allies, but has been marginalized by official historiography. The work revolves around the relationship and use of photography as an instrument of colonial power, but also as an element of self-representation, as evidence, as a trace.

The wolf has returned to the Vercors plateau... A menace to the shepherds and the breeders ? A precious object to be protected by the guards ? A fascinating symbol of authentic nature for ecologists ? As many visions of the mountain, as many projects for the wolf, the sheep, the forest, the prairies... Inspite of all the divisions, everyone can see that a new mountain is begining to come to life. A mountain which erases the traces of history and offers new approaches to nature and the wild.

Three bank robbers, Eijima, Nojiri, and Takasugi, flee the police and escape into the mountains. At an inn high in the Japanese Alps, Eijima and Nojiri encounter a young woman and her father, as well as Honda, a mountaineer. The inn folk do not realize their guests are wanted criminals and the visitors are treated with great kindness. Honda volunteers to lead them over the mountains, but Eijima's paranoia endangers all of them as they make the perilous trip.

France, 1915. Young and radiantly beautiful Centaine de Thiry is the happiest woman in the world: in a few more hours she will be married to pilot Michael Courteney, the love of her life. But fate has it otherwise: Michael is shot down in a reconnaissance plane shortly before his wedding. Life has lost its meaning for Centaine.
