Magic Kingdom Club Gold Card 1993 Update

Before there was D23, there was the Magic Kingdom Club, think of it as a Frequent Flyer program for Walt Disney World, and Disneyland. The club started in 1957 just 2 years after Disneyland opened. It started by offering discounted tickets to employees of large, sponsoring companies, throughout Southern California. MKC, as it was known provided a free employee benefit while the companies promoted Disneyland to their employees. The program went national in 1971 with the opening of Walt Disney World and included some unique perks, Vacation Packages, Group travel discounts and discounts with partner airlines, rental cars, cruise lines, and Hotels. The club produced Magazines and newsletters and in 1991 added the MKC Gold Card, a for-fee membership allowing people who didn’t work for a sponsoring company to join, bringing us to this video. This was an “annual” VHS cassette sent to MKC Gold club members. In 1991 the theme was “Dick Tracey” with “Detective Mic” in Update ’91.

The Magic Kingdom Club is celebrating its’ 35th anniversary in 1993 and Lumier starts off by inviting us to sit back, pull up a chair as the Magic Kingdom Club proudly presents Update ’93. With the opening of the Euro Disney Resort, there are now four destinations spanning the globe and each one invites Magic Kingdom Club members to ‘Be Our Guest” with special benefits and discounts.

Ok, it’s not 1492, it’s 1992 and the New World that Christopher is discovering is, of course, Walt Disney World and he is just in time for the 20th-anniversary celebration complete with 20 new thinks to discover at WDW, with all new parades, shows, and entertainment. How is all of this possible? With the MKC Gold Card of course and the 1992 Magic Kingdom Club Membership.

Walt Disney himself hosts this year MKC update, introducing Tinkerbell as our guide. (leveraging footage from the 1958 An Adventure in the Magic Kingdom Wonderful World of Color television series) Disneyland is celebrating its 40th Anniversary and Magic Kingdom Club Gold Card members save 10% on accommodations at the Disneyland hotel, and 15% on dining, not to mention discounted tickets to Disneyland Park.
