Bergman took one of his favourite plays to Copenhagen for a guest performance, which was even broadcast on Danish TV. In his Copenhagen The Misanthrope, Bergman maintained a dual approach. On the one hand, a production of Molière's play as a theatrical game performed in style and intellectually conceived; on the other hand, an exposure, through physical and psychological intensity, of the emotional tragedy in which Alceste and Celemine are both victims. Expectations were high prior to Bergman's production of The Misanthrope. A reviewer wrote, 'For the first time Molière's connection to the Danish stage is intercepted by a director whose forte is physiological tragedy, Strindberg over Holberg'. Many reviews had expected Bergman to put his very personal stamp on the production. Instead they experienced 'a clean Molière' and were struck by Bergman's faithfulness to the original mise-en-scene and to the classical rhythm of Molière's text.

Behind his sharpness and irony, as he wrote mostly on the negative aspects of things, he was a warm and tender man, and this shone through in his work. Through his acute inner gaze and self-knowledge, Kostis Papagiorgis, who is probably the most important essayist of contemporary Greece, meditates deeply on the Human Condition.
Petr Vyazemsky decides to die. He is intelligent, but weak. He has had many trials. He was insulted and humiliated by a bully. A young man, but already strong and severe. What to do? To pass by with your tail between your legs? Or to commit an act at least once in life? And Peter Ivanovich dared: stole the boor, put him on a chain in his village house and began to re-educate, strongly trying to make this bully more human with the help of science, poetry, music. He made him a condition: if the prisoner passed the exam, he would be released. And if not, he would die... In a month of intensive studies, Vyazemsky makes the impossible: the bully becomes interested in studying! And the professor himself discovers a warm feeling for the object of his pedagogical experiment... And now he doesn't want to part with his new friend. For this he has to do the worst thing for an honest man - to break his word.
