Tom O'Halloran's Christchurch-shot, silent Super 8 film One Way to the Sea posits a dystopian nightmare in the earthquake-struck city. Walter Benjamin is one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, yet his work is relatively unknown to many. In the summer of 1967, a hippie group called The Diggers - led by the cool and charismatic 23-year old David DePoe - wanted to turn the street where they resided, Yorkville Avenue in Toronto, into a car-free zone. Fed up with the noise and fumes from cars, DePoe staged a 3-day sit in where the Diggers peacefully occupied the street to petition the Toronto City Council to get what they wanted. To their surprise, the police were ordered to remove them by force by the city officials who wanted to keep the street open as a necessary traffic artery. After being released from jail, DePoe and his group were invited by the fiercely conservative and patronizing Allan Lamport, a member of the Board of Control and former Mayor of the city to a meeting at City Hall to present their case. The climactic battle unfolded there between Lamport and DePoe, who was representing the Canadian Youth Council.
With “One-Way Street”, we see an evolution in Dahlberg’s work, fram an emphasis on literal architectural structure towards a more dynamic play with abstraction, marked by his use of theatrical lighting and reflected images of an almost dreamlike quality. In the Jungian sense, abstraction’s purpose is to break the object’s hold on the subject, thus freeing the content from old meanings. When this separation occurs, as it does in Dahlberg’s work, the space for new meanings opens up.

This essay film is about Hong Kong as a place, or rather as a series of places, each with their own series of histories. Mak is after public and private histories, and the ways they commingle, intertwine and sometimes even obliterate each other. Her materials are multiple: she takes what she calls “appropriated archival footage and propaganda films from the 60s and 70s done by the British Hong Kong Government," and cuts, loops, zooms, slows and manipulates them to make striking distortions. To these “official” materials, made strange through video manipulation, Mak adds black-and-white Super 8 video of her own, digitally altered to sometimes look battered and archival, highly worked into a beautifully ghostly, grainy, evanescently visible texture. Images are juxtaposed promiscuously in double and quadruple frames, often paired images of intangibly related material, elegantly matched to be thought provoking as well as to offer visual delight.
