Jamaa Fanaka’s first project plays off the Blaxploitation’s genre conventions, an adaption of Goethe’s “Faust” presented with a non-synchronous soundtrack and superimposed over a remake of Super Fly (1972). Often out of focus with an overactive camera, the film immediately exudes nervous energy, but unlike Priest’s elegant cocaine consumption in Super Fly, Willie’s arm gushes blood as he injects heroin. A morality tale in two reels. —Jan-Christopher Horak
Clerk in The Meadow is sitting in an apartment. The surrounding air is dusty and smells of books. The sound of Philip Glass fills the headphones. His thoughts are floating around. He is thinking of the fabric of reality. What is the world made of? What was the beginning? Is it the mythological reality of Genesis on the first day of creation, or a second after the Big Bang? Stories of the world coming into being often start with mentions of light, with calling upon light – moving away from the void and from the past and getting ready to awakening and transformation. He is fantasizing about light and lightness. It is about origins of the beginning and the beginning of each day, about sun rays as pets.
With somatic knowledge, Naima Ramos-Chapman sculpts a kinetic monument on the same rooftop in the name of healing and freedom-- where they were arrested at gunpoint as a teen in 2005. Filmed during the pandemic and in the midst of the BLM movement, they intend to liberate their own body through the process of rupturing memory with collective recall and dreaming in response to the state violence and the only virus that has truly plagued their family for generations: white supremacy. May this be a balm.
The film was realized according to the formulaic concept "TAM 4/71."

This year marks two important pop-culture milestones: The 40th anniversary of Star Wars on May 25, and the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band a week later, June 1. Our new album merges both into one full-length concept album titled Princess Leia’s Stolen Death Star Plans. It’s the entire Beatles album as accurately as we could record it, only now it tells the story of Star Wars: A New Hope — in order. We sweat the details on both sides in an effort to do both cultural milestones justice. Writing hyper-specific lyrics that match the original songs’ cadences; reverse-engineering everything the Beatles recorded, from distorted saxophone riffs to Indian tabla rhythms; recording everything from scratch and learning as we went — well, that’s what takes five years.
