This film was the second installment of what I call the URBAN LANDSCAPE SERIES. The film is more like an extension my earlier film Exposures, but this time I made a much more valiant attempt to say what I wanted to say. By the time I made this film I felt that I had mastered the art of cinematography.

Sid lives in self-imposed isolation with his dog, Ace. That is until, one day, amidst the surrounding mountainscape, Sid sees a mysterious house appear on the horizon. Upon closer inspection, this house is familiar; it is his home. The same ravaged stone, mossy notches, and chipped painted wood. As Sid’s initial suspicions continue to grow, so does his all-consuming obsession with the house. He starts to plant traps and experiments, each taking him a step closer to the truth; that the house is a window into his future.

Based on the famous Chinese novel “Kam Ping Mui”, “Gentle Reflections” is about the love and hatred of three girls, Lin (Irene Wan), Yi (Kennix Kwok) and Mui (Yeung Ling). Lin was forced to marry Long (Liu Kai Chi). She was miserableand begged Chung (Tsang Wai Kuen) to take her away, but he refused. Lin was desperate and when Hing (Sinn Lap Man) came and seduced her, she was more than willing to kill Long and marry Hing. Yi loved Chung but due to misunderstanding, she married Hui instead. Hing lusted for Yi and killed Hui to get his hands on her. Yi then pretended to marry Hing in order to kill him for revenge. Lin and Yi competed for Hing’s attention and Lin’s maid Mui was involved…

A sophisticated piece of filmmaking, this 1962 short is built around a simple device: a young woman, Andrea (Andrea Adams), falls asleep on a train, has a dream of finding and entering an old house in the country with a man (Ron Dix) who describes the experience in voiceover in a matter-of-fact tone, and then is shaken awake in her seat; once she disembarks, the events of the dream are replayed shot for shot, and she narrates her movements in voiceover. In the final sequence, Andrea repeats her dreamed gesture of staring unhappily into a bedroom looking glass, only this time smashes it, glancing back at her splintered reflection as she is embraced by her lover.
