Song For Our People is an inspiring new documentary about a group of a professional musicians and artists who come together one day in a Brooklyn recording studio to create a powerful new anthem to honor the perseverance of their African-American ancestors, and to energize the on-going fight for a more just American society.

A SONG FOR OURSELVES is an intimate journey into the life and music of Asian American Movement troubadour Chris Iijima. Struggling to make sense of their father’s early death, his teenage sons learn that during the 1970s when Asians in America were still considered “Orientals,” Chris’ music and passion for social justice helped provide the voice and identity an entire generation had been in search of. Through animated photographs, intimate home movies, archival footage of Chris’ introduction to nationwide television by John Lennon and Chris’ own songs, their father’s life takes on bigger meaning than they had ever dreamed of.

Uyyala songs are an agricultural tradition rooted in the political expression of women in Telangana. Through these oral traditions, ‘Songs of our Soil’ traces the histories of their resistance and memories of disillusionment. By looking at women’s participation in major political movements, from the Telangana people’s movement, to the demands of justice from the contemporary Mallana Sagar irrigation project, this film attempts to complicate the relationship between memory, history and cultural production.

After the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011, Komori Haruka and Seo Natsumi chose to live and film in Rikuzentakata. This work is a visual record of four people who applied for a workshop Komori and Seo devised, showing them visiting the town and getting to know its people and landscape. The opportunity to hear personal experiences of the disaster decreases with time, but this film provides a bridge to new encounters and communication, in addition to including a story written by Seo entitled “Double Layered Town.”
