By chance, Mancer joins a stand-up comedy competition for the prize money and becomes instantly hooked. He’s addicted to the joy he feels from making people laugh. However, after the competition, Mancer couldn’t make people laugh again. While searching for inspiration, Mancer realizes that his best jokes seem to come from his hardships – the ridicule he received at school, his difficulties at work, his struggles in caring for his father, and even the worldwide pandemic. In the interior of the island of Brač, a group of women lives in an unusual off grid community. They do not believe in private property or hierarchy, they manage the community by direct democracy, share the land, they grow and forge plants trying to be autonomous as much as they can. They are plagued by drought, lack of water and resources, as well as climatic changes. Each of the members of the community has escaped from a past life and together they are trying to build their own small self-sustaining oasis. But when the question of registering ownership in the land register is raised, the very survival of the community comes into question.

This drama tells the story of three single women of the same age, all named Huang Li Jiao. They are respectively from China, Singapore and Malaysia. They all reside in Singapore and crashes into each other lives after a car accident. Though the three of them share the same name but due to their different backgrounds, cultures and education level, they have very different personalities. It is also because of these differences, that they will have different considerations and choices when they face issues related to love, family or self, eventually resulting in different fates for the three of them.

Koichiro Shimada is sent to a research facility in Kenya, Africa by a teaching hospital in Japan. Who Stands Up for Alvar is a critique of an overburdened welfare system that drains caregivers of valuable energy they could be devoting to their clients, as well as a poignant look at the need for “ordinary” human kindness.
