The Human Comedy

Teenager Homer Macauley stays at home in the small town of Ithaca, California to support his family while his older brother Marcus prepares to go to war.

Penniless and desperate for money, a married couple and a fuerdai cook up a fake kidnap for ransom scheme among themselves. Married couple Pu Tong and Mi La are as ordinary as can be. When their employers default on their compensation, they are unable to pay rent. Yang Xiao Wei is a fuerdai "second-generation rich" who is unloved by his own father. Xiao Wei owes Ba Ye a substantial sum of money that he has no way of paying off.

Various dialogues are elaborately woven to bring tiny splits in human relationships to light, and through the three episodes the characters have their moments of realizing that they are actually in solitude.

The film has four main-storylines. A shoe store girl who likes Tony Leung, a couple who is suffering from cockroaches and is looking for a new apartment, a salesperson who is worried about his ex-wife, and a young actor from a small theater group who is afraid of being seen naked by his mother.

The story revolves around a Spring, a hitman from mainland China who is on a mission in Hong Kong with his partner Setting Sun. However, Spring falls ill and comes under the care of a screenwriter by the name of Soya and they find themselves developing into a tight and everlasting friendship.
