Voices From The Barrens

Any telling of history is incomplete without the voices of the oppressed. Today, 17 graduating seniors from The Maxine Greene High School for Imaginative Inquiry breathe new life into words of social justice heroes who have resisted and dissented throughout American history. This video is part of a larger commissioned project and ongoing partnership between Lincoln Center and Voices of a People's History of the United States, which seeks to educate and inspire a new generation working for social justice.

In the picturesque Israeli Negev desert lays the Bedouin Village of El-Sayed. It has the largest percentage of deaf people in the world yet, no hearing aids can be seen because in El-Sayed deafness is not a handicap. The tranquility of the village is interrupted by Salim El-Sayed's decision to change his deaf son's fate using the Cochlear Implant Operation. This bionic implanted chip, that can make deaf people hear, is slowly reaching more secluded areas, even to El-Sayed which has neither paved roads nor electricity. Salim's decision is evoking great conflict in the village threatening the tradition of coexistence between deaf and hearing.

The double portrait of two young Korean women: one studies music in North Korea, the other international relations in South Korea. In the 70th year of Korea's division, South Korean documentary filmmaker Sung-Hyung Cho ventured between the fronts and discovered striking similarities in the lives of both women on both sides of Korea.

Through her journey she comes to know the cruelty and beauty of the world, as well as loss.

Aboriginal singer Zaachariaha Fielding is taking the Australian music industry by storm; touring the nation and the world with his groundbreaking electro-soul band Electric Fields. From winning New Talent of the Year at the National Indigenous Music Awards, Zaachariaha returns to the tiny central desert community of Mimili to reveal the inspiration behind his unique music. Through revealing interviews with Zaachariaha and his family, we learn of the challenges he was forced to overcome as a child, and his journey to music stardom as a proud member of the LGBTQ community.

A documentary that highlights the religious left and the fight for marriage equality in Minnesota. The director spent nearly a year interviewing faith leaders across a spectrum of beliefs, along with scholars, politicians, and everyday people—all discussing how their views of religious texts and traditions support marriage among any two consenting adults. The title, "God Votes No," stems from the effort to defeat a proposal on the November 2012 ballot to define marriage in the Minnesota state constitution as the exclusive domain of one man and one woman. "God Votes No" features interviews with U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, practicing Mormons Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of the Duluth band Low, and author Jay Michaelson, among many others.

Ten families read letters from their loved ones killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom in this powerful and moving HBO documentary by Oscar and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Bill Couturie (Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam). Photos of the soldiers in military and civilian life are shown as family members read the final correspondence received from Iraq and share their thoughts and memories about the fallen troops and the realities of war.
