In the center of the story are former lovers who have to go a long and dangerous path in order to save their son and find a common language with each other again. A young veterinarian from Moscow, Vasily Bulatov, is kidnapped by a group of terrorists from a Greek hotel and transported to one of the regions of Syria.

A man goes for a walk through the countryside with his dying mother.

The escaped prisoner Kolya comes to a lonely hut lost in the forest where grandfather Nikitich whiles away his days. The grandfather hospitably receives the guy, feeds him. The owner and the guest are imbued with sympathy for each other. Kolya tells Nikitich about how he escaped from prison, and the grandfather tells about his sin committed in his youth. In the morning, while Nikitich is sleeping, Kolya leaves the hut, taking his grandfather’s gun.

In this dreamlike film, a nameless father and his son, Aleksei, live together in an apartment in St. Petersburg. Aleksei's mother has died and consequently the two have a very close relationship. When Aleksei acquires a girlfriend, she refuses to take a back seat to his bond with his dad, and breaks up with him. Aleksei is also experiencing nightmares, dreading separation from his father to be a part of the military as his father was.

Andrey lives with his sick mother, suffering serious disease, schizophrenia. Close relatives are tired of dealing with the disease: his father cut loose from his family long time ago, now he has another family; his sister also left home and for several years no one has heard from her. Only Andrey does not give up - day after day he fosters his sick mother, saves money and compiles documents to take her to Germany for treatment. But the fate is merciless to the main character - his mom dies the day before the departure - Andrey's world turned upside down - He hits the road to talk to his sister, to look into his father's eyes, to understand himself... "The Son" is a parable, a dream. The film is based upon a simple story about complicated relationships between a son and his parents and, what is most important, with himself. The relationships that end in tragic outcome.

Music teacher Alexandra Polyakova withdrew into herself after her four-year-old son Danya disappeared without a trace during a walk. Even after three years, Alexandra does not lose hope of finding a child, although his search has long been stopped. One day she recognizes her son in a news story, but her ex-husband Anton, the police and colleagues assure that this is a mistake and there is no chance to find the boy. In 2013, Dima Ilukhin, the cousin of the film’s director and a soldier in the Russian army, died on duty in the Republic of Dagestan in the North Caucasus. He was 21 years old. This incident marks the starting point for Abaturov’s reflection on the military. He films the training of new recruits in Siberia, as they bid farewell to their mothers and girlfriends, learn the mechanics of a Kalashnikov, or how to throw a hand grenade and administer first aid. While his parents try to cope with their loss, Dima’s former fellow recruits have to return to battle.

Two students are late for the last commuter train and have to spend a night in a strange town. They rack their brains about where to find shelter and quite by chance they overhear a talk between father and son. The son is an adolescent who is head over heels in love with a girl several years his senior. He is living through the first drama of his life though his love is just puppy love. Then, being resourceful fellows, they think of a plan to pass one of them for the elder son of this family. The reason they give for his unexpected arrival is that he is a child of the father's long-forsaken love. They presume this cock-and-bull story will come off, and right they are!

Shurik Kleymenov, the son of a famous ski coach, goes with his father to competitions. At first arrogant, Shurik, watching the difficulty of the path to sports victories, eventually begins to understand that sport can become a worthy goal for him in life. Objective and modern, yet permeated with a fresh folk quality that goes back to the reckless and lovely Tartary of Genghis Khan, it rises above all its inescapable Soviet-isms into a new frontier region of plains, mountains, tents and herds, a world still appreciably beyond the range of Western cameras.
