Geraldine Snell’s Dancing is a home video playfully capturing a moment of sublime sunlight shining onto a flaking living room wall. One fixed shot documents the shadows of a door being abruptly opened, the artist’s hand dancing in the stream of the sunlight cast upon the wall, her figure moving across the frame, and the door being closed again. Made at the start of the Covid-19 lockdown in the UK, it became the first in a series of works titled Light & Love, focused on careful observation of immediate and ephemeral phenomena.

It’s been five years since her husband had passed away. Fuyuko lives in the quiet suburbs, in a small but loving home with her three beautiful daughters. Haruko, the eldest, is the lead vocalist in a band. Natsuko is the conscientious type, who spends her days in ballet classes beautifying herself. Shot at Coney Island, New York's legendary amusement park, over two years from 1974-1976, this beautiful landmark of American experimental film languished in semi-obscurity for three decades after its 1980 debut. Restoration was a complex process involving algorithmic computer programming deployed to synchronise sound with images originally recorded (on monochrome Super 8mm film!) at the unusually slow rate of 18 frames per second. The result is cinema as a miraculous time-travel machine, a city-poem which transports us to hidden corners that only a true Coney-Islander would know: a native like writer, director, producer and editor Paula Gladstone. She also arranged the soundtrack, featuring music that ranges from Duke Ellington to the Drifters ("under the board-walk, down by sea...") and, most stirringly, LaBelle.
