July ’71 is as much a record of the daily experiences of light and shadow as it is a catalogue of domestic life. More involved with “straight photography” than Brakhage, but far more engaged with tactility and the plastics of the image than Jonas Mekas, this early work embraces the mundane—making bread in the kitchen, riding bikes by the San Francisco Bay, hanging out in a cheap-looking flat with friends, plucking a game fowl for supper—while also paying attention to the wind, water, and trees that surround these fleeting moments.
A document in the form of a portrait. Shot in June 2000 at Phil Hoffman's Independent Image-Making Workshop, this film stays close to the participants and the film medium itself as they work on their projects.
In Workington Red (2019), Julia explores the ways iron, coal, steel and nuclear industries have impacted landscape, ecology and life around West Cumbria. The artist’s participatory methods are represented through the integration of interviews with local people, the inclusion of varied and intergenerational perspectives, and a commissioned musical performance by a local male voice choir. Conversations circle around a balance, or tension, between the natural wealth of earthly resources and the learned and honed skill of labourers.
Profile of four independent women filmmakers: Joanna Davis, Tina Keane, Annabel Nicolson and Lis Rhodes, who are shown at work with Felicity Sparrow of Circles, the Women's distribution group which they helped to found. They relate the struggle for a new cinema to the wider aims of the women's movement.
Despite being literally visible, the conditions surrounding labor in the service industry often go unseen. Eating & Working & Eating & Working is a feature-length documentary film that follows six people working in the food industry from the beginning to the end of their work day. Along the way, participants, including food thinkers, writers, and researchers, discuss the joys and frustrations of working in food, the skills utilized in their labor, and the impacts of sexism, racism, and classism on their work environments. Like many of the restaurants and businesses featured in the film, this documentary is a labor of love, a film made on a miniscule budget in an effort to tell stories that are often glossed over in media coverage of food culture.
The main idea of this video essay is to reinterpret the process of working with found film footage and the interpretative possibilities. The footage originates from former socialist Czechoslovakia and the artist here attempts to depict, by revealing the creative process, how this epoch may be read. Non-traditional instruments are used here, such as, for instance, randomness. Its impact on the form of the subsequent description of socialism highlights the thought processes and their certain salience as a template.
Explore the legend of Hollywood’s most celebrated cat, Orangey, in this adaptation of Dan Sallitt’s essay of the same name. The prolific feline actor’s 16-year filmography includes roles in Rhubarb (1951), The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), The Diary of Anne Frank (1959), and Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)—or did it? The protege of star animal trainer Frank Inn, Orangey’s storied career leads Sallitt – who shares the screen here with another curious co-star – on the trail of a mystery.
A Neopolitan hustler named Antonello is living his life in Torino. He turns tricks as a transvestite, using the name Rosatigre, or more commonly, Rosa. His closest pal is Wanda, who exercises the same “profession” and, being his best friend, is also the incarnation of his feminine alter ego. While we watch the two of them hanging out on the street, sweet and carefree as the young Moll Flanders, we eavesdrop on their exchange of confidences and learn the secret details of their private lives. Wanda could have been a teacher but she preferred the street, where she can indulge her sentimental, dreamy nature in sighing over the "Americano" she once met in Naples, for whom she still carries a torch.
