Loosely based on Charles Dicken’s book “A Tale of Two Cities”, Working Class tells the tale of underground street artists Mike Giant and Mike Maxwell and their decade long friendship that started with a tattoo. The story is told through the cities they call home by, cutting back and forth between the neighborhoods of San Francisco and San Diego, as the artists talk about their life philosophies and the work they create.
We're alone in a car with the director and Tom Jarmusch, Jim's brother, who tells us stories — about the 1990s, about the city, about cinema — as we drive through New York.
A film about sex and sexual identity. Interviews are used in the film to lead a discourse on day-to-day dealings with sex and identity and explore how these are construed out on the street, in film/on television and in personal relationships. How can insinuations and overtones be counteracted? Who or what decides a person’s sex? An active queer community exists in Berlin. Queering is perceived as an exercise in re-examining experiences, perceptions, knowledge, constraints and desires.

The film shows works of art by people of various occupations who are engaged in fine art in their free time. It was achieved through interviews in which people talk about the world of work - a world of no freedom, necessity and coercion in which they do not see themselves as individuals. Painting enables them to escape from everyday banal reality into the world of beauty and freedom. So-called ordinary people of various occupations have a built-in awareness of the problematic nature of humanism in the modern world. Through interviews, the film articulates a story, kind of - it is a vision of the apocalyptic end of modern civilization that has no higher, metaphysical meaning. At the same time, there is hope that after the collapse of modern civilization, a society of meaning, love and freedom can be created.

From 1977 to 1991 an image of Slovenia as a green, demilitarised and peaceful country of diligent people reigned in Yugoslavia, a country where differences are not only allowed, but also desired. This period ends with a ten-day war, when the identity turns from peacefulness, modesty and diligence into courage and a fighting spirit. The film documents the changes in Slovenia and its inhabitants, which have in recent years brought us to a completely different understanding of national identity, different from the one which was true in Slovenia as well as abroad twenty years ago.

Working Together, the title of my documentary/sequel to my father’s film, traces the consequences and questions that were implied in Woodcutters. My father’s intuition about the importance of what was happening during the filming of Woodcutters once again shows his political instinct. Inherent in the original film is not only the question of Black and white working together, but what happened to the civil rights movement in the 70s and its destruction. - Michael Rogosin
